BACKGROUND
NNWAC iniated a feasibility study in 1992 after consulting with community development agencies in five major US cities. The study, funded by a grant from the Chicago Department of Planning, outlied the preferred ownership modeloffering equiy ad sustainable affordabliity. In 1995, NNWAC conducted a city-wide survey of artists: Business of Art Space. Additional data also was collected from studies previously conducted through federal, civic and arts organizational sources. In 1996, NNWAC purchased a 46,000 sq. ft. unused warehouse for $299,000 with a bridge loan from the Chicago Community Loan Fund to convert into a 25-unit live and work space. Artists invested in writing comprehensive business plan which reflected their needs for work and living.
